Mad Men Dress – the nonexistant result…

So…

My Mad Men dress was a bust, I was away the days leading up to the contest and my second practice dress had been another disaster, I have decided to work on skirts more, bodices seem to be eluding me.

I still have my fabric that I was going to use for this dress so I will have to think of what to use it for.

Any suggestions?

PS

I also just discovered that the deadline had been extended… to yesterday… lol

Mad Med Dress part 3

I have been working on my Mad Men dress for Julia Bobbin’s dress challenge. So far I ave hand sewn my practice dress, I seem to have went wrong somewhere though… It’s looking like it is going to be too small, I haven’t tried it on yet so we will what happens tonight.

All I know is that I am very happy that I am making a practice dress out of broadcloth before I touch the fabric I ordered online!

I decided to stay with the original dress that I picked out.

Mad Men Dress Pattern

Lately I have been working on drafting my pattern for my Man Men dress. The local shop that I get my fabric from doesn’t have sewing patterns for sale.  So my patterns are made by me. Usually I just google things and piece it together from what I can find. Or find a tutorial online. I have been having a lot of trouble finding a tutorial for a sheath dress. I finally found a pattern here.

It lets you print the pattern which would be ideal if I had a printer… Since I don’t I have drawn it out by hand – just free hand, no measurements yet. I will figure that part out later. I also picked up some white broadcloth to try the pattern out on before I use the fabric that I ordered online.

A couple of changes. Mine will be boat neck, and will not have a belt, also the back will be more like the one in the pictures on my first Mad Men Challenge post.

Here is what I have so far, my drawing abilities peaked at stick people so apologies for the quality of the drawing…

It’s a bit hard to see since its small and I was using a pencil but if you click on the picture it should get bigger.

Next week I am going to start measuring and cutting out the pieces on the broadcloth. Tonight I might work on my Dopp Kit, but more on that later.

What do you prefer, tutorials or patterns? Would you rather print off a pattern or buy one in a store? Or do you like to make your own? How about tracing clothes you already have?

Mad Men Dress part 2

You know how once you find something you like you should stop looking and be happy with it, well I kept looking at Mad Men dresses and found this one:

Maybe I could get a royal purple material to make this, or an emerald green. I don’t think that I could complete it in a month so I will most likely stick with my original idea (see part 1 here) I will attempt to make this dress sometime… Maybe Julia will have the Mad Men challenge again next year.

I started looking because my body type matches Joan the best but the other dress will work for me. I have never been a big fan of boat necks, so that should be an adventure.

Ordering Fabric Online

I have been a bit hesitant to order fabric online even though I see it blogged about all the time. Today I took the plunge and ordered some fabric from Joann’s.

Here’s the swatch

I am going to use it for my Mad Men Challenge, see my earlier post for more info on that. Links are not working for me at the moment but I will update this when I get a chance.

Hopefully all goes well, I will still visit my local fabric shop to get the fabric for the liner, there are very limited options there for what kinds of fabric I can get but I love going there.
